Generally, the best way to approach an interview is to adhere to simple common sense, and by sticking to the basics. The ability to listen, answer questions in a direct manner, and show genuine enthusiasm should not be underestimated. As mentioned previously, doing your homework will be a huge help come interview time. Learn as much as you can about the company and the interviewer, and make sure you know exactly where to go. Re confirm the time, and try to turn up early (5-10mins max). It might sound obvious, but turn your mobile phone off!
If you are aware of a particular skill set the employer is seeking, but you have not used it for a few years, try to brush up on it before the interview. There is a growing trend to conduct technical tests in interviews so be prepared there.
Stay positive, and be careful not to offer personal opinions on sensitive subjects. It is highly recommended that you avoid criticising your former employers, and give an honest account of the key reasons you moved on from each role.
Listed below are some common questions asked by interviewers. Having some good honest concise answers that focus on key issues will help you leave a good impression.
  Tell us about yourself
What can you bring to this role?
Why did you leave your last job?
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
  What are your greatest strengths?
  What are your weaknesses?
What do you do in your spare time?
Why do you think you will be successful in this role?
Keep in mind that sometimes you might not be a good match for the role, or someone else might be a better match. If you are met with bad news, try to take something positive from it. Don't be afraid to ask for leads to other companies hiring similar skill sets.
Some good questions to ask in an interview…
What type of person is successful here?
What is your best selling product / service?
  Why is this position available?
Will further training become available if I am successful in the role?
Is technology highly regarded in this organization?
What have been the major technology issues so far?
Did senior people in this company start out in lower positions?
At the conclusion of an interview, always try to leave a good impression. Be courteous and thankful for the interviewers time, and reaffirm your interest in the position. If using a recruiter, check with them if it is suitable to send a follow up email.
Finally, make sure that your references are aware you are job hunting, and that they are relevant to your job search. (i.e, they are a former manager, not just a friend). If you feel you will receive a bad reference, let the interviewer know in advance so they can manage their own expectations.
2. Professional Appearance
Your professionalism, confidence and enthusiasm are all critical factors that interviewers take into account. How you look is also very important. It is usually best to play it safe, and dress conservatively in relation to the role you are applying for. Make sure your clothes are clean, appropriate, and fit you well. Keeping to a healthy diet, and keeping yourself physically fit will make you feel better about yourself and this will also come across in an interview.
