Managing recruiters

Recruitment agencies play a key role in the job market and can be instrumental in helping you secure your ideal position. However, many people can get frustrated by the service they receive from agencies, so the following guide may help you “manage your recruiter” better.

1.) Try not to register with every company in town. You will probably be better served to keep it down to just a few, and where possible, try building a relationship with each individual recruiter. The better you get to know them, the more they will work for you and possibly advise you of upcoming positions or roles that may not be on the market yet.

2.) Look for agencies that specialize in your particular field. For Example, if you are looking for help desk work, an executive search firm might not be of much use to you.

3.) Be patient! Employment agencies should not be confused with career counsellors. Their role is to fill the jobs that their clients are unable to recruit by themselves, and can often struggle to service everybody whose resume they receive.

Job Hunting Tips

Finding the perfect job can be one of the most difficult but rewarding tasks a person can do. As so many variables need to be taken into account, it is often a simple mistake for job seekers to leave out important information, or present themselves poorly when it really matters. This section is designed to give you a guideline on how to present yourself, what to say, and give you an idea of how successful people climb the career ladder.

1. Set realistic targets

If you do not set yourself well thought out and intelligent goals your job seeking will lack focus and direction. Make sure that you are applying for jobs where your experience and education match the employers requirements, and that you are aware of the competition you will be competing against. In entry level positions for example, you may be competing with over 100 other applicants, so being an exact match for the skills required will go some way in getting you to the next step. However, don't be afraid to aim too high! It will do you no good going through life thinking you could have achieved so much more if only you aimed higher.

2. Research!

We can not stress this point enough. If you are targetting a specific industry, learn who the major players are, their points of difference in the market, and as much information on market trends as you can find. Similarly, if it is a specific company, learn as much as you can, e.g annual reports, organisation structure, history, product range etc. the more you know, the better, and your homework will begin to pay off in an interview situation.

3. Be productive

Job hunting has an unstructured nature, and it can be difficult to manage your time. Approach your job hunting as you would a full time job. Create a system to plan and prioritise job hunting tasks, and set measurable goals to define the success of each task. An example may be to set yourself a goal of speaking to a hiring manager of a company every day. If, after a few weeks this goal does not produce results, then step it up to 2 hiring managers per day. At the end of each day, reflect on whether the day has been successful. keep track of any useful leads or tips, and think of ways in which you can improve for tomorrow. Like any job, the longer you do it, the better you will get at it.

4. Keep your spirits up!

For some, job hunting may take many months, so it is important to keep yourself busy and happy with the spare time you have. Try not to deprive yourself of things you could not do if you were working (e.g play golf, go to the beach). Keeping yourself fit and healthy and sticking to a healthy diet will also be a great help. The IT industry is a dynamic one, so developing new skills and staying current with industry trends will also help your cause.
